God sakes! To change the oil filter you have to drop the pipes. To change 2 spark plugs you have to removed both seats, removed the fuel tank, remove the surge tank and air filter housing. Then after you do it from the book, you realize if you have good tooks you didn't have to do all that.
But they are changed and I'm good for another 8000 miles. So at 24K I'll do it the easy way.

Nothing like learning from hands on. Most of the time the book has you going around the world to get home.

Another forum that I am a member of has Wiki pages for maintence. Since the EX-500R is considered a "beginers" bike we have quite a few newbe's that have never owned a bike befor...much less worked on one....i do have to say that it has made some of the work done that i have done to my bike quite a bit easier.
on the other hand my bike is one of the easier bikes i have worked on. Pull the seat (twist of a key) pull the side farirings(a couple of bolts) then pull the tank (one bolt and some fuel lines) and wah la you are looking at the two lonely plugs...lol...
speaking of that i do need to do a valve adjustment here in the near future (before riding season gets into full swing)...last time i did one i discoved that two little o-rings were bad...and of corse i could not find any in town...so i was out $2.00 for the o-rings and $14.00 for the shipping...boy was i aggervated..to say the least...
