Starter is toast. Could have had it repaired but didn't want to take a chance with a 1500 mile trip 21 days away. Could happen with a new one too but. . . . . .
Yamaha starter $474, aftermarket $200. My aftermarket will be here Monday hopefully.
Will save the old one and have it fixed for a spare later.

Hate that for you, but better now than 21 days from now.

You could always start it like I had to on the Hamilton trip.

Once I recover from the trip I'll have the old one repaired as a back up

Roger, I'm going to take the old one off tomorrow. I'll let you know how the take-off goes.

Does it look like you need to take the tank off?

For some reason they tied troubleshooting and removal real close together. Removal was disco neg lead, remove two bolts , remove the boot and nut off the positive terminal and remove starter. I took it over to the truck and tested it. It spins like hell but the shaft never moves in or out. Back on the road tomorrow? We'll see.

Might be just gummed up on the bendix. WD the hell out of it might free it.

no shaft movement means no solinoid latching...should be a simple fix for the electric man on sand road...Monday weather not looking too good for riding anyway.

Now we're confused. New starter isn't engaging either. It spins like hell, but that's all. Getting fuses for my mulitmeter to run some tests tomorrow.

is the solinoid in a different spot? I wouldn't think so but it is a Jap bike.
